Quinoa Crusted Tofu From Scratch

Quinoa-crusted tofu is a delicious and protein-packed dish that combines the nutty flavor of quinoa with the crispy texture of tofu. This recipe is perfect for those looking for a plant-based alternative to traditional breaded proteins. The quinoa coating adds an extra layer of crunch and provides a wholesome twist to this classic dish. Serve it as a main course or use it as a protein-rich addition to salads and bowls. Follow the instructions below to create a flavorful and satisfying quinoa-crusted tofu.

-

Ingredients:

1 block of firm tofu

1/2 cup cooked quinoa

1/4 cup bread crumbs (or gluten-free bread crumbs for a gluten-free option)

2 tablespoons nutritional yeast (optional)

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

2 tablespoons cornstarch or arrowroot powder

2 tablespoons water

2 tablespoons olive oil (for cooking)

-

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with oil.

  2. Drain and press the tofu to remove excess moisture. Cut the tofu into rectangular slices or desired shapes.

  3. In a shallow dish or bowl, combine the cooked quinoa, bread crumbs, nutritional yeast (if using), smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to evenly distribute the ingredients.

  4. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch or arrowroot powder and water until smooth. This will serve as the binding agent for the quinoa crust.

  5. Dip each tofu slice into the cornstarch mixture, ensuring it is coated on all sides.

  6. Roll the tofu slice in the quinoa mixture, pressing gently to adhere the crust evenly. Repeat this process for each tofu slice, setting them aside on the prepared baking sheet.

  7. Once all the tofu slices are coated, drizzle them with olive oil. This will help achieve a golden and crispy texture.

  8. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the quinoa crust is golden brown and crispy, flipping the tofu halfway through for even cooking.

  9. Once cooked, remove the quinoa-crusted tofu from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

  10. Serve the quinoa-crusted tofu as a main course alongside your favorite side dishes or use it as a protein-rich topping for salads, grain bowls, or wraps.

  11. Enjoy the crispy, flavorful, and protein-packed quinoa-crusted tofu!

Note: Feel free to adjust the seasonings to your taste preferences. You can also experiment with different herbs and spices to create your own unique flavor profile.
